Introduction
Sports injuries are extremely common and can range from mild sprains to severe fractures. Understanding common injuries and how to prevent them allows you to stay active and healthy throughout your life.
1. Ankle Sprains
The most common sports injury, occurring when the ligaments around the ankle are stretched or torn. Prevention: proper warm-up, ankle strengthening exercises and appropriate footwear.
2. Knee Injuries (ACL Tears)
ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) tears often require surgery and months of rehabilitation. Prevention: lower-body strengthening, landing technique training and proper sports gear.
3. Shin Splints
Pain along the shinbone common in runners, dancers and military recruits. Prevention: gradual increase in training intensity, proper footwear and rest days.
4. Rotator Cuff Injuries
Common in swimmers, tennis players and overhead athletes. Prevention: shoulder strengthening exercises and proper throwing technique.
5. Stress Fractures
Tiny cracks in bones from repetitive force. Common in runners and gymnasts. Prevention: adequate calcium and vitamin D, gradual training progression and rest.
When to See a Doctor
Any sports injury causing significant pain, swelling, inability to bear weight or limited range of motion should be evaluated by an orthopaedic specialist promptly.
